Over one million Syrians returned home since Assad overthrow – U.N.

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – More than one million people returned to their homes in Syria after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, including 280,000 refugees who came back from abroad, the U.N. said on Tuesday.

Filippo Grandi, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said, “Since the fall of the regime in Syria we estimate that 280,000 Syrian refugees and more than 800,000 people displaced inside the country have returned to their homes.”

“Early recovery efforts must be bolder and faster, though, otherwise people will leave again: this is now urgent!,” he added.

In January, Grandi announced that approximately 30 percent of the millions of Syrian refugees currently residing in neighboring countries are considering returning to their homeland next year.
