KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – Rashid Sofi, a legendary Kurdish-Syrian musician and composer, passed away on Monday at the age of 72 in a hospital in Kobani, following a battle with liver cancer.
Sofi was one of the pillars of Kurdish music and culture, leaving behind a profound artistic legacy that shaped Kurdish musical heritage.
A Life Devoted to Music
Born in 1953 in Kobani, northern Syria, Rashid Sofi grew up in a religious household, where his father served as the region’s Mufti (Islamic scholar). Initially, he was influenced by religious chants and Sufi traditions, which later shaped his distinct musical style.
His journey into professional music began in 1970, when he started performing religious hymns and exploring Eastern music. His passion for the oud (lute) grew over the years, earning him the nickname “Prince of the Oud” in Kurdish musical circles.
During his high school years in Aleppo, Sofi participated in music festivals, where he refined his talent. He was deeply inspired by Kurdish music legends such as Hassan Zirak and Mohammad Arif Jazrawi, which contributed to the development of his unique vocal and instrumental style.
A Lasting Musical Legacy
Sofi released his first song, “Mi Nanûşa”, in 1977, marking the beginning of a prolific musical career. His most notable albums include:
- “Ez Mêvanê Dilê Teme” (1986)
- “Xweziya Hêvî” (1994)
Both albums received wide recognition and played a significant role in modernizing Kurdish music. His work stood out for its deep lyrical content and rich instrumental arrangements, blending traditional Kurdish melodies with Eastern musical influences.
Beyond his solo career, Sofi contributed to Syrian television and won multiple accolades, including:
