DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity during a phone call with Syrian Transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa, the Kremlin announced.
The conversation, described as “constructive and substantive,” focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, including economic assistance, humanitarian aid, and strategic partnerships.
Expanding Cooperation
According to a statement from the Kremlin, Putin expressed Russia’s readiness to support Syria in overcoming its current economic and social challenges. He emphasized Russia’s continued efforts to provide humanitarian aid and contribute to stabilizing Syria in the post-conflict era.
“The discussion covered several pressing issues related to practical cooperation in trade, economic development, and education,” the statement said, adding that the leaders reviewed recent talks held in Damascus between Russian officials and Syrian counterparts.
The phone call comes amid ongoing efforts by the Syrian transitional government to rebuild state institutions and revitalize the economy after the collapse of the previous administration. Russia has been a long-time ally of Syria and played a significant role in the country’s political and military landscape.
Russia’s Role in Post-War Syria
Since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, Russia has positioned itself as a key partner in Syria’s reconstruction. Moscow has advocated for the lifting of Western sanctions on Syria and has pushed for greater international engagement in the country’s rebuilding process.
In recent months, Russia has increased diplomatic and economic engagement with the Syrian transitional government, including sending a high-level interministerial delegation to Damascus to discuss future cooperation.
The Kremlin’s statement also reiterated Russia’s stance on Syria’s territorial integrity, indirectly addressing concerns over foreign military presence and ongoing regional conflicts affecting the country.
Challenges and Future Prospects
While Russia remains a crucial partner for Syria, the country faces significant hurdles in rebuilding its economy and restoring normalcy. International sanctions, continued security threats, and political fragmentation pose challenges to the transitional government’s plans for stability and reform.
Despite these difficulties, Moscow’s continued diplomatic and economic support suggests a long-term commitment to Syria’s recovery. The coming months will determine how this partnership evolves and whether it can help Syria regain its footing in the international arena.
