DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir O. Pedersen, has been actively engaging with Syrian political factions, civil society, and international stakeholders as the country undergoes major transitional changes, according to an exclusive statement from Jennifer Fenton, spokesperson for the UN Envoy.

“The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Mr. Geir O. Pedersen, briefed the Security Council in closed consultations on Thursday,” Fenton told North Press. “He remains in Damascus, and his engagements these past few weeks include discussions with the caretaker authorities as well as hundreds of Syrians from various political groups, women, civil society, experts, and individuals from diverse regions and backgrounds.”

The UN envoy is also holding talks with key international players, reflecting the complex regional and global dimensions of Syria’s political landscape. “Additionally, he continues to engage with a wide range of interlocutors from relevant states,” Fenton added.

Recent political shifts in Damascus, including the formation of a transitional government, have drawn international attention and scrutiny. According to Fenton, “Mr. Pedersen took note of the announcements from Damascus regarding the transitional developments.”

As the situation unfolds, Pedersen remains closely involved on the ground, monitoring the implementation of political agreements and ensuring they align with international legal frameworks. “The Envoy remains actively engaged on the ground, closely assessing developments and consulting on these matters,” she stated.

Reaffirming the UN’s stance on Syria’s future, Fenton emphasized: “The United Nations continues to support a credible, inclusive Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political transition that addresses the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people, in accordance with the core principles outlined in Security Council resolution 2254, including the formation of a transitional government, the drafting of a new constitution, and the holding of free and fair elections.”

Background on the Syrian Political Transition and UN Involvement

Syria has been in a state of conflict and political instability since 2011, following mass protests that escalated into a civil war. Over the years, various factions, including the Syrian government, opposition groups, and Kurdish-led forces, have vied for control. The war has resulted in widespread displacement, economic collapse, and humanitarian crises.

The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, currently Geir O. Pedersen, has been working on facilitating a political solution in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 (2015). This resolution calls for:

  • A Syrian-led political process
  • The drafting of a new constitution
  • Free and fair elections under UN supervision
  • The formation of a transitional governing body with mutual consent

Despite multiple rounds of UN-backed talks, efforts to reach a political settlement have faced numerous challenges, including disagreements over constitutional reforms, the legitimacy of different political actors, and foreign interference.

The recent developments in Damascus, where a transitional authority has been announced, mark a significant shift. The UN is closely monitoring these changes, engaging with various Syrian stakeholders, and reiterating the importance of an inclusive, legitimate political transition. Pedersen’s visit to Damascus and his consultations with civil society, political groups, and international actors reflect ongoing diplomatic efforts to ensure a peaceful and democratic resolution to the conflict.
