Syrian Foreign Minister Welcomes EU Decision to Suspend Sanctions
By Kardo Roj
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani welcomed the European Union’s decision on Monday to suspend sanctions on Syria for one year, describing it as a “positive step” toward the permanent lifting of restrictions.
In a tweet posted on the social media platform X, al-Shaibani expressed hope that the decision would contribute to improving living conditions for the Syrian people and advancing sustainable development in the country.
EU Decision on Sanctions
Earlier in the day, EU foreign ministers agreed on a “roadmap” to ease sanctions imposed during the presidency of Bashar al-Assad. The plan includes a temporary suspension of sanctions targeting Syria’s energy and transport sectors, though financial restrictions remain in place.
Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, stated that the decision could be reversed if Syria’s leadership fails to meet the agreed-upon conditions. The roadmap aims to stabilize Syria’s economy and support reconstruction while ensuring accountability and reform.
Shaibani’s Optimism
Al-Shaibani characterized the EU’s decision as a long-awaited move that aligns with Syria’s aspirations for economic recovery and rebuilding. In his statement, he emphasized that the lifting of sanctions, even temporarily, would alleviate the burden on the Syrian population and pave the way for broader international cooperation.
“Syria looks forward to seeing this decision positively impact various sectors and contribute to the sustainable development of the country,” he wrote.
Challenges Ahead
While the suspension of sanctions marks a significant development, it remains conditional on continued political progress and adherence to international norms. Analysts note that the EU will closely monitor Syria’s actions over the next year to ensure compliance with its roadmap.
The temporary lifting of sanctions is seen as a test for Syria’s leadership to demonstrate its commitment to reforms and stability. Should the conditions be met, the suspension may lead to the full removal of restrictions in the future.
Economic Relief for Syria
The EU’s decision is expected to bring much-needed relief to key sectors in Syria, particularly energy and transport, which have been severely impacted by years of economic isolation. Alleviating these restrictions could open the door for increased international trade and investment, creating opportunities for economic growth and development.
However, challenges remain as Syria navigates the complex process of rebuilding its economy and addressing the humanitarian needs of its population.
The EU’s decision to suspend sanctions and the Syrian foreign minister’s welcoming response signal a potential turning point in the country’s efforts to rebuild and re-engage with the international community. As the one-year suspension unfolds, all eyes will be on Syria’s ability to meet the conditions set by the EU and advance its journey toward stability and development.
