Local armed group captures ISIS leader in Syria’s Daraa

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – A local armed group captured on Monday a prominent leader of the Islamic State (ISIS) after years of his disappearance in rural Daraa, southern Syria.

According to a local source, a local armed group apprehended Suhaib al-Hariri, also known as Atta Allah al-Shami, a senior ISIS leader in eastern Daraa, during an ambush along the road between the cities of Sanamayn and Kafr Shams in eastern Daraa.

The source revealed that al-Hariri, originally from the town of Busra al-Harir in eastern Daraa, was intercepted in a vehicle carrying a significant cache of weapons, including medium-caliber firearms.

The source speculated that “the weapons were previously held in Sanamayn by Mohsen al-Heimid, a leader of a faction that collaborated with the former Syrian regime and had ties to ISIS.”

The weapons were being relocated to prevent them from falling under the control of the new administration in Syria, the source noted.

The source also confirmed that “al-Hariri has been the primary ISIS leader in eastern Daraa. Local groups, consisting of residents from the area, have been actively pursuing him for nearly four years.”
