UN reports nearly 200,000 Syrian refugees return home in 2025

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations announced on Saturday night that nearly 200,000 Syrian refugees have returned to their country since the beginning of 2025.

Filippo Grandi, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), said that as of Jan. 16, approximately 195,200 Syrians have returned to Syria.

Grandi revealed plans to visit Syria and neighboring countries soon to enhance the UNHCR’s support for both refugees and host communities.

The UNHCR estimates that over 550,000 Syrians returned to their home country in 2024, with Aleppo Governorate seeing the highest number of returnees, accounting for about 23 percent.

The United Nations anticipates that approximately one million Syrian refugees will return in the first six months of 2025.
