Iraqi Forces Confirm Agreement with Syria’s SDF Over Border Point Withdrawal

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Border Forces announced on Tuesday that fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) had exited a point previously within Iraqi territory. The withdrawal reportedly proceeded smoothly, and officials denied any tensions with SDF fighters.

Reports of Tensions Debunked

Social media rumors recently suggested tension on the Syria-Iraq border, with claims of an Iraqi military incursion. However, Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified in a statement that the SDF fighters had vacated a location near the second battalion area of the 17th Border Brigade. The move was part of an effort to complete the construction of a concrete wall along the border.

The statement urged media outlets and the public to exercise caution when reporting border developments and to rely on official sources to avoid misinformation.

Agreement Between SDF and Iraqi Forces

A source within the SDF confirmed to North Press that the withdrawal occurred through mutual agreement with the Iraqi military. The SDF fighters had initially occupied the point to counter threats posed by the Islamic State (ISIS) after the group seized large areas near the Syria-Iraq border.

The source stated, “We handed over the location to the Iraqi military and withdrew our forces from the area near the Tel Kocher/Yarubiyah crossing point.”

Strengthening Border Security

The Iraqi government is enhancing border security with Syria by constructing a concrete barrier along critical areas. The border wall aims to prevent unauthorized crossings and improve coordination between Iraqi and Syrian security forces.

Both sides emphasized the importance of maintaining stability in the region and enhancing cooperation to address shared security concerns, including the persistent threat of ISIS and cross-border smuggling.
