Turkish Drone Strike Targets Syria’s Kobani Countryside, Casualties Reported
KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – A young woman was injured on Thursday as a result of a Turkish drone strike targeting Ilajag village in the western countryside of Kobani, northern Syria.
Mohammad Saleh Ibrahim, a resident of Ilajag village, told North Press, “Samira Hussein Abdi, 20, was transported to Kobani Hospital after being struck by shrapnel from the attack.”
The drone strike reportedly involved four shells, which hit a hill in the center of the village. The attack caused material damage to a house and a vehicle belonging to a resident of the area.
Medical Condition Stable
A medical source from Kobani Hospital stated that Abdi received first aid and that her condition is now stable. “She sustained injuries to her leg but is expected to make a full recovery,” the source added.
The same source reported that additional shells landed near villages along the eastern banks of the Euphrates River, particularly in the areas of Qasimiyah and Qumlagh.
Escalating Tensions
The drone strike is part of ongoing Turkish military operations in northern Syria, which have intensified in recent months. These operations are often justified by Turkey as targeting positions of Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which Ankara considers linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
However, local residents and officials argue that such strikes frequently endanger civilians and disrupt daily life in the region. The Kobani countryside has been a repeated target, with drone strikes and artillery shelling causing casualties and damage to infrastructure.
Regional Impact
The escalation in Kobani raises broader concerns about the humanitarian and security situation in northern Syria. Human rights organizations have called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, emphasizing the disproportionate impact on civilians.
Observers fear that continued strikes could destabilize the region further, jeopardizing fragile security arrangements and fueling resentment among local communities.
International Response
Despite repeated appeals from local authorities and international bodies, Turkish military actions in northern Syria show no sign of abating. The situation has drawn condemnation from human rights advocates who demand accountability for civilian harm and adherence to international law.
The impact of Thursday’s strike underscores the precarious reality faced by residents in Kobani and surrounding areas, where ongoing conflict poses a constant threat to safety and stability.
