Mass grave discovered in Syria’s Daraa sparks calls for forensic investigation
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Residents in the northern countryside of Daraa, southern Syria, discovered on Saturday a mass grave containing dozens of skeletal remains near a former military site of the toppled regime forces.
A local source from the town of al-Sanamayn told North Press that the grave was unearthed close to the 9th Division’s headquarters in the north of Daraa.
Residents, using rudimentary tools, uncovered over 20 skeletal remains buried just beneath the surface.
The source added that excavation efforts were halted after community members demanded the involvement of specialists to ensure evidence preservation.
Such measures are critical to help families identify the victims and avoid tampering with potential forensic evidence.
The Syrian Civil Defense in Daraa has been contacted to provide expertise, though the arrival of their team remains pending.
This discovery follows another mass grave found in mid-December 2024 on a farm near the Damascus-Daraa Highway, west of Izraa in the eastern countryside of Daraa.
The incident underscores the lingering scars of Syria’s past and highlights the ongoing need for accountability and proper handling of such sensitive discoveries.
