Maysaa Sabrine becomes first woman to lead Syria’s Central Bank

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – In a historic move, the new Syrian administration appointed on Monday Maysaa Sabrine as Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, making her the first woman to lead the nation’s primary financial institution in over 70 years.

This milestone follows the appointment of Aisha al-Dibs as Head of the Women’s Affairs Office earlier this month, marking a growing representation of women in leadership under the caretaker government.

Sabrine succeeds Mohammad Issam Hazima, who had held the position since 2021 under the previous regime.

With over 15 years of experience in finance and banking, Sabrine brings a wealth of expertise to the role.

A graduate of the University of Damascus, she holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in accounting and is a certified public accountant. Her previous roles include serving as First Deputy Governor of the Central Bank since 2018 and representing the bank on the Damascus Securities Exchange Board.

Sabrine also headed the Directorate of Government Supervision of Banks, showcasing her deep knowledge of Syria’s financial systems.
