Solidarity Protest in Damascus Calls for Refugee and IDP Rights

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – A solidarity protest was held Monday in Damascus’ al-Hijaz Square to support Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs), urging recognition of their rights and addressing their ongoing challenges.

Similar protests were held earlier in Qamishli, Aleppo, and Suwayda, demonstrating widespread calls for action to alleviate the plight of displaced Syrians.

Ibrahim Qrayatis, a political and civil activist, highlighted the dire conditions faced by over two million IDPs in Syria. “They are scattered across 1,904 camps, suffering from a lack of drinking water, heating during the cold season, and poor living conditions,” he said.

Qrayatis emphasized the importance of prioritizing displaced Syrians in the agenda of any new government and international organizations active in Syria. “More than half of Syria’s population is displaced or living as refugees. It is essential to reconnect them with their homeland, especially as many have lost or expired their identity documents. Their representation and involvement in the transitional process of any future political settlement are crucial,” he added.

A Call to Action

Aiham Watfeh, one of the organizers of the protest, stressed the need to keep refugees and IDPs at the forefront of national priorities. “This protest is not just a demand but a reminder of their enduring suffering. Refugees and IDPs should never be forgotten or relegated to a secondary concern,” he said.

Watfeh called for the voluntary and dignified return of displaced Syrians to their homes. “We must ensure their safety and well-being and prevent forced deportations from host countries. Their return must be under suitable and humane conditions,” he added.

The solidarity protests across Syria underline the urgency of addressing the displacement crisis and ensuring the rights and dignity of refugees and IDPs in any future policies and solutions.
