U.S. commits to Syria’s transition, counter-terrorism efforts
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The U.S. Department of State stressed on Wednesday evening Washington’s intention to ensure that emerging powers in Syria clearly understand the expectations of the international community if they seek recognition and support.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized it remains committed to engaging in Syria’s transitional process to prevent the country from becoming a ground for terrorism.
“We know from hard experience that what happens in Syria doesn’t necessarily stay inside of Syria. And whether it’s enabling a base for terrorism that gets exported, whether it’s mass displacements of populations that have had impacts way beyond Syria, it really matters.”
Blinken noted that if the HTS does not want isolation, “then there are certain things that you have to do in moving the country forward and make sure you’re moving it forward in an inclusive way, in a non-sectarian way, to deal with and protect minorities, to deal with some of the security challenges, whether It’s chemical weapons, whether it’s groups like ISIS.”
Blinken added that the U.S. acted swiftly to foster consensus among Syria’s neighbors and the broader international community regarding the desired trajectory for Syria’s future.
