Turkey and Allied Factions Violate Ceasefire in Northern Syria
By Kardo Roj
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Wednesday that despite U.S.-brokered ceasefire efforts, Turkey and its allied factions continue to launch attacks on several areas in northern Syria.
Over the past few days, Turkey and its proxies have escalated their assaults on strategic locations, disregarding agreements to de-escalate the conflict.
Continued Attacks Despite Ceasefire
In a statement posted on its official website, the SDF reported that:
“Despite U.S. efforts to mediate calm, Turkish occupation forces and their mercenaries have continued their attacks yesterday and today on areas around Kobani, Tishreen Dam, and Ain Issa.”
The SDF noted that Turkish drone strikes and artillery fire have intensified in these regions. On Tuesday evening, the SDF successfully downed a Turkish Bayraktar TB2 drone near Qaraqozak Bridge.
Defensive Measures
The SDF stated that it has adopted defensive positions to repel attacks and protect northern and eastern Syria, with a particular focus on safeguarding Kobani.
Accusations Against Turkey
The SDF accused Turkey of exploiting the ceasefire to advance its agenda, stating:
“Turkey is attempting to use the ceasefire as a cover to continue its aggressive plans of colonization and displace the local population. Its ambitions to occupy the region and impose demographic changes are no longer hidden.”
Escalation and Humanitarian Concerns
This escalation in northern Syria comes amid broader instability in the region, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. Aid organizations have expressed concerns about the humanitarian impact of the ongoing conflict, particularly in light of infrastructure damage and restricted access to essential services.
