Iraqi army secures border with Syria following Assad overthrow

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Iraqi army announced on Thursday that it has fully secured the nation’s border with Syria, ensuring its safety against potential threats.

Abdul-Amir Rashid Yarallah, Chief of Staff of the Iraqi Army said that the Iraqi-Syrian border is safe, and they will not allow any threats to it.

Yarallah highlighted the reinforcement measures taken along the border, including the establishment of a robust defensive line manned by the army and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).

He detailed additional measures such as a concrete barrier, surveillance cameras, and continued deployment of units from the Ministry of Interior to strengthen the border’s defenses.

He indicated that they have ensured the presence of a solid security infrastructure, and there is no friction with forces on the Syrian side.

Earlier this month, the Iraqi army confirmed ongoing actions to bolster border protection. These steps come in the wake of significant developments in Syria, where factions allied with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham recently seized control of Deir ez-Zor and its surrounding areas, leading to the toppling of the Assad regime on Dec. 8.
