UNSC holds emergency meeting on Syria after Assad regime’s fall

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held on Monday an emergency closed-door meeting on Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

American and Russian diplomats confirmed that UNSC members will collaborate on drafting a statement, which is expected to focus on key issues surrounding the evolving crisis in Syria.

Russian Ambassador to the U.N., Vasily Nebenzya, said during a press conference following the meeting that the council demonstrated a degree of unity regarding the importance of preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and unity, protecting civilians, and ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches those in need.”

Deputy U.S. Ambassador Robert Wood, echoed similar sentiments, noting that most council members addressed these priorities during discussions.

He added “Now we’re really focused right now on trying to see where the situation goes. Can there be a governing authority in Syria that respects the rights and dignities of the Syrian population?”

Meanwhile, Syrian Ambassador to the UN, Qusay al-Dahhak, stated that Syrian embassies and diplomatic missions worldwide have been instructed to continue their operations and maintain state institutions during the transitional period.

“Now we are waiting for the new government,” al-Dahhak explained, “but meanwhile we are continuing with the current one and the leadership.” He also noted that Syrian Foreign Minister Bassam Sabbagh, appointed by al-Assad, remains in Damascus.
