Russia asserts security of bases in Syria amidst regime collapse

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Defense Committee in the Russian State Duma declared on Monday that Russian bases and units in Syria face no immediate threat and remain fully secured.

This came after Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied opposition factions announced the overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

In response, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Sunday that its military bases in Syria have been placed on high alert to safeguard Russian citizens and assets in the region.

A senior Russian parliamentarian, quoted by Interfax news agency, warned that Russia will respond decisively if its bases in Syria come under attack.

The Kremlin also emphasized that Russian forces in Syria are taking all necessary measures to ensure the security of its military installations.

It acknowledged the turbulent situation, stating that Syria will face a complicated period of instability, and we will engage with regional countries to find a resolution.

The Kremlin further noted that Russian officials indicated plans to discuss the future of their military presence in Syria with the new authorities once stability is restored.
