SDC celebrates fall of Assad, envisions a democratic Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) extended on Sunday heartfelt congratulations to the Syrian people, celebrating the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s rule after Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and allied factions seized Damascus in the early hours of the day.
In an official statement, the SDC declared: “We congratulate our great people on this pivotal moment and pledge to continue working to establish the foundations of a democratic, pluralistic state that achieves equality and justice, respects diversity, safeguards human rights, and is built on the principles of equal citizenship.”
The SDC highlighted this turning point as the beginning of a transformative journey for Syria: “We believe that this historic moment marks the beginning of a new path and that we all face the significant task of rebuilding and constructing a modern constitution that reflects the will of the people, achieves transitional justice to honor the victims, and heals the wounds of the past.”
Underscoring their commitment to inclusivity and collaboration, the SDC added: “We will work with all Syrian national political, cultural, and societal forces in a spirit of dialogue and responsibility to build a new Syria that embraces all its children, with their diverse ethnic, religious, and sectarian backgrounds, without exclusion or marginalization.”
Earlier on Sunday, the HTS and its allied opposition factions broadcast a statement on Syrian state television, announcing “The tyrant Bashar al-Assad has been overthrown.”
