U.S. to work with SDF, Kurds to stop ISIS resurgence in Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The White House said on Saturday that the U.S. is going to work with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Kurds to stop any resurgence of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the main priority is to ensure “that the fighting in Syria not lead to a resurgence of ISIS.”

“We are going to take steps ourselves, directly and working with the Syrian Democratic Forces, the Kurds, to ensure that does not happen.”

In a statement issued Saturday, the White House confirmed that President Joe Biden and his national security team are closely monitoring developments in Syria and maintaining communication with regional partners.

The White House reaffirmed its commitment to preventing a resurgence of ISIS and averting a humanitarian disaster in Syria as the country’s conflict evolves.

“President Biden and his team are closely monitoring the extraordinary events in Syria and staying in constant touch with regional partners,” the statement read.

The U.S. maintains approximately 900 troops in Syria. Gen. Bryan Fenton, head of U.S. Special Operations Command, noted that while it is too early to predict how Syria’s instability might impact the U.S. military presence, the priority remains disrupting ISIS activities and safeguarding American forces.
