U.S. calls for de-escalation amid rising tensions in Northwest Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The United States government expressed on Saturday concerns over the deteriorating situation in Syria, particularly the escalation in the northwest.

In a statement, U.S. National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett, highlighted that Syrian government’s refusal to engage in the political process outlined in United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2254, coupled with its reliance on allies Russia and Iran, has significantly contributed to the current instability.

This current instability includes the collapse of the “Assad regime” lines in the region, according to the statement.

The statement clarified that the United States has no involvement in the ongoing offensive, which is led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a group designated as a terrorist organization.

U.S. officials reiterated their commitment to urging de-escalation, the protection of civilians and minority groups, and advancing a credible political process to bring the protracted Syrian conflict to an end.

The U.S. reaffirmed the importance of its military presence in the region, emphasizing its role in preventing the resurgence of ISIS. “We will continue to fully defend and protect U.S. personnel and military positions,” the statement read.

The call underscores the necessity for a resolution aligned with UNSC 2254, aiming for a sustainable political settlement to Syria’s ongoing civil war.
