Syrian government reinforces positions in Southern Syria’s Daraa amid fears of unrest

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – On Saturday, the Syrian government strengthened its military presence in the southern city of Daraa by deploying dozens of personnel to strategic locations and intensifying patrols, sparking concern among local residents over potential escalations.

A local source told North Press that government forces dispatched reinforcements to key positions in Daraa, including the central Red Building Institution and the courthouse. Each position reportedly received dozens of soldiers, many armed with RPG launchers.

Upon arrival at the Red Building Institution, troops began fortifying the site by filling sandbags, barricading windows, and sealing off entrances.

Increased Military Activity

The reinforcements coincided with an unprecedented increase in patrols throughout the city’s neighborhoods, especially around high-profile areas such as the governor’s residence and major public squares, the source added.

These measures have alarmed local residents, who speculate that the heightened military activity may be a precaution against possible unrest. This comes as opposition factions continue to advance in northern Syria, seizing towns and villages in Aleppo and Hama provinces.

Context of the Escalation

Daraa, often referred to as the cradle of the Syrian revolution, has remained volatile despite a 2018 reconciliation agreement brokered by Russia, which ostensibly returned the area to government control. Sporadic clashes, assassinations, and a lack of security have fueled tensions in the region over the years.

As opposition factions gain ground elsewhere in Syria, fears of a ripple effect in Daraa have grown. The city’s strategic importance as a gateway to Jordan and its symbolic role in the conflict make it a focal point for both government and opposition forces.

Uncertain Future

While the Syrian government appears to be bolstering its defenses, the residents of Daraa remain on edge, wary of the potential for renewed conflict in a city that has already endured significant hardship during the years-long war.

Observers are closely monitoring developments in Daraa as the broader Syrian conflict continues to evolve, with no clear resolution in sight.
