Russian FM Reiterates Russia’s Support for Syrian Government
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reaffirmed on Thursday Moscow’s steadfast support for the Syrian government and its commitment to preserving Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In an interview with Syria’s state-run news agency SANA, Zakharova emphasized that Syria remains a cornerstone of regional stability and security. “Russia stands firm in its support for the Syrian state and its people, ensuring their independence and sovereignty,” she said, adding that attempts to undermine Syria represent “ongoing and continuous aggression.”
Condemnation of Western Policies
Zakharova criticized what she described as the “destructive policies” of Western powers, particularly the United States and the United Kingdom, accusing them of fostering chaos in Syria through their backing of armed groups.
“The presence of U.S. forces in Syria is illegal and supports groups that plunder Syria’s natural resources,” she stated, reiterating Russia’s opposition to what it sees as Washington’s “hostile approach” toward Damascus.
Zakharova further accused Western countries of prolonging instability in Syria to serve their geopolitical interests, framing their actions as part of a broader agenda to weaken Syria’s sovereignty.
Russia’s Role in Syria
Since the outbreak of the Syrian conflict in 2011, Russia has been a critical ally of the Syrian government, providing military and political support that has bolstered President Bashar Assad’s position. Russia’s involvement has included direct military intervention and diplomatic backing, often clashing with U.S. policies in the region.
Zakharova’s remarks come amid heightened tensions in Northwest Syria, where Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front) and the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) recently launched an offensive against Syrian government forces in Aleppo and Idlib. The opposition forces claim to have captured key locations and advanced toward Aleppo city, further destabilizing the region.
Broader Implications
The Russian Foreign Ministry’s statements highlight the continuing friction between global powers over Syria’s future. While the U.S.-led coalition maintains a presence in Northeast Syria, ostensibly to combat ISIS, Russia has repeatedly condemned it as a violation of international law.
Zakharova concluded by reiterating Russia’s dedication to Syria’s sovereignty, stating that Damascus’s stability is essential for broader regional security.
