Pedersen meets Syria’s FM to discuss constitutional committee’s work

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, met on Sunday with Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Bassam Sabbagh, to discuss the resumption of the constitutional committee’s work.

Pedersen stated that he will continue engaging with the Syrian government and with the opposition to restart the committee’s activities.  

He emphasized the importance of addressing multiple interconnected issues in Syria, including the political and security situation, economic challenges, sanctions, reconstruction, and the refugee crisis.

Pedersen stressed that the first step in advancing the political process is to resume the work of the constitutional committee.

Pedersen also highlighted the urgency of avoiding further escalation in the region and ensure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon to prevent Syria from being drawn into the conflict.
