Republican member says no reason to withdraw U.S. troops from NE Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A member of the American Republican Party stated on Sunday that the U.S. presence in northeastern Syria will remain unchanged in the near future, emphasizing that as long as the security threat posed by the Islamic State (ISIS) persists, there is no reason for withdrawing American forces.
Hazem Alghabra, a Republican Party member and former advisor at the U.S. State Department, told North Press that support for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the fight against ISIS remains essential, as the terrorist threat is still imminent.
He added that they have to be realistic and continue this productive partnership.
After former President Donald Trump’s return to office and his previous remarks about bringing U.S. troops home, many speculated about a potential American withdrawal from Syria.
Currently, around 900 American soldiers are stationed in Syria in a joint mission with the SDF to combat ISIS.
Alghabra pointed out that should the need arise to increase U.S. troop presence, there will be no hesitation. But at this point, there is neither a reason nor a desire to reduce the number of forces in northeastern Syria.
