EU grants €500,000 in aid for refugees crossing from Lebanon to Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The European Union (EU) announced on Wednesday immediate emergency funding of €500,000 to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to assist refugees crossing the border from Lebanon into Syria.

The funding aims to address urgent humanitarian needs at the four main border crossings between Syria and Lebanon, where the UNHCR is currently active, the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) announced.

Michael Ohnmacht, Head of Delegation of the European Union to Syria, emphasized the importance of swift action, stating, “It is crucial that the EU can help swiftly to alleviate the suffering of those fleeing conflict and destruction.”

The funds will support six months of humanitarian operations, focusing on providing essential shelter items, including plastic sheeting and 10,000 mattresses and blankets.

The EU noted that the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) will manage the distribution of these supplies to refugees.

This emergency aid comes as part of the EU’s ongoing commitment to support those affected by the crisis in Syria.

“The current displacement crisis adds an additional burden on Syria and its local responders, who are still in the midst of a widespread humanitarian crisis,” the ECHO said.
