Jordan foils suspected Iran-led plot of arms smuggling – Reuters

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Jordan prevented a suspected plan led by Iran to smuggle weapons into the country in order to support groups opposed to the ruling monarchy and carry out acts of sabotage, sources told Reuters on Wednesday.

According to two informed Jordanian sources who told Reuters, the weapons were sent by Iranian-backed militias in Syria to a cell of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan with ties to the military wing of Hamas.

The two sources, who preferred not to be named, said they cannot disclose the specific acts of sabotage that were allegedly being planned, indicating there are ongoing investigations and covert operations.

The weapons were seized when members of the cell, who are Jordanians of Palestinian descent, were arrested in late March.

The sources mentioned that security services have been successful in preventing various attempts to smuggle weapons into the country.

While most of the illegal arms trafficking was intended for the West Bank, some weapons, including those seized in March, were allegedly meant for use within Jordan by a Brotherhood cell aligned with Hamas militants, according to the Jordanian sources.
