Iraq executes 11 ISIS members convicted of “terrorism”

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Iraqi authorities announced on Monday executing 11 individuals affiliated with the Islamic State (ISIS) convicted of “terrorism” charges.

The authorities said the execution took place in the central prison in the city of Nasiriyah in Dhi Qar Governorate, in southern Iraq, under the supervision of a delegation from the Ministry of Justice, before the bodies were handed over to their relatives.

According to Iraqi law, terrorism and murder convictions, even drug trafficking, can lead to the death penalty by hanging.

It was not known whether the accused were those repatriated by Iraq from Northeast Syria or had previously been imprisoned in Iraq.

On April 22, 11 people convicted of “terrorism” were executed, which sparked concerns among human rights groups, such as Amnesty International, which condemned an “alarming lack of transparency,” as it feared more people were executed in secret.
