Iraq to repatriate 750 ISIS family members from Hawl Camp
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Iraq will repatriate over 700 people linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) from Hawl Camp in Northeast Syria, Iraqi official said on Saturday.
Ali Abbas, spokesperson of the Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displaced, told Rudaw that they will repatriate 750 Iraqis from Hawl Camp later this month.
Hawl Camp is a home to approximately 55,000 individuals, comprising 2,423 families with connections to ISIS militants originating from around 60 countries.
Rudaw said, citing an Iraqi official, that a group of some 165 families, totaling over 700 people, have left the Hawl Camp and are expected to arrive in al-Jada’a camp in Nineveh Governorate within the coming two days.
The Iraqi lawmaker said, under condition of anonymity, that more Iraqis were registered to be repatriated but some chose to stay in Syria.
On March 24, Iraqi Minister of Migration and Displaced, Evan Yacoub, said that nearly 2,000 families have left Hawl Camp since 2014.
The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) has repeatedly urged states to repatriate their nationals linked to ISIS from Northeast Syria, but these calls received timid response.
