U.S. denies prior knowledge of Israeli strike against Iran in Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A U.S. official confirmed that the United States had no involvement or prior knowledge of an Israeli attack on a diplomatic compound in Syria, which resulted in the killing of a senior Iranian general.
The National Security Council spokesperson reiterated to the Axios website that the U.S. had no involvement in the Israeli strike and was unaware of it beforehand.
According to Israeli and U.S. officials, Israel informed the Biden administration a few minutes before its air force conducted the strike. However, Israel did not seek or require a U.S. green light or approval for the operation.
The U.S. official stressed that Israel’s notification about the strike was not detailed and came when their jets were already in the air.
On April 1, Israeli airstrikes targeted the Iranian consulate in Damascus, resulting in the killing of seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) military advisors.
Due to concerns about potential retaliatory strikes from Iranian-allied militias in Syria, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are on high alert, according to a senior Israeli official.
A senior U.S. official expressed the belief that there is a high likelihood of an escalation in fighting between Israel and Iran, along with its proxies.
Additionally, Iran’s Ambassador to Syria emphasized that the country will deliver a decisive response to the Israeli regime
In response to the Israeli aggression, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kan’ani stated that Iran reserves its rights to take countermeasures and will decide on the type of reaction and punishment for the aggressor.
