Lebanese official says 3,000 Syrians detained in Lebanon
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Hector Hajjar, Minister of Social Affairs of Lebanon, stated on Friday that the number of Syrians in Lebanese prisons amounted to 3,000 prisoners, emphasizing that their presence in the country poses security risks.
During a dialogue seminar held in Paris, Hajjar said that 85 percent of the crimes in Lebanon are committed by Syrians, and 40 percent of detainees in security agencies in Lebanon are Syrians.
Lebanon currently hosts around two million Syrian refugees, with approximately 830,000 of them registered with the United Nations (UN).
Hajjar further highlighted that the number of Syrians residing in Lebanon amounts to half of the Lebanese population. Additionally, there is a huge number of children who do not have official documents.
Hajjar said, citing the World Bank, that the Syrian refugees cost Lebanon approximately $1.5 billion annually.
