Lebanese Army rescues 20 Syrian asylum seekers from Mediterranean
DAMSCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Lebanese Army announced on Monday rescuing 20 Syrian asylum seekers from drowning off the coast of Tripoli, northern Lebanon.
In a statement, the Lebanese Army said, “Information was available about a boat sinking off the coast of the city of Tripoli in northern Lebanon, while it was being used to smuggle people.”
“An army naval patrol was able to rescue 20 Syrians, including women, who were on the boat,” the statement read.
The eastern and northern Syrian-Lebanese border has witnessed frequent human smuggling attempts for over a month due to the deteriorating economic and security conditions in Syria. This has led to attempts of illegal migration to Europe by sea in search of a better life.
