Syrians experienced “merciless slaughter” by government – U.S. Rep
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, U.S. Representative Joe Wilson said that the Syrian government has inflicted “atrocities” on the people in Syria during the 13-year-old civil war.
Wilson’s remarks came at a session at the U.S. House of Representatives to discuss a bill introduced by a group of U.S. lawmakers on May 11, 2023.
The bill, dubbed ‘Assad Regime Anti-Normalization Act’, seeks to prohibit the U.S. from normalizing relations with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and to impose further financial sanctions.
Wilson condemned the “merciless slaughter, systemic rape,… and chemical warfare used against the people of Syria.”
“We had devastating bombardment and the killing of so many civilians that the United Nations has stopped counting at over half a million innocent civilians,” added Wilson, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia in U.S. House of Representatives.
He also noted that al-Assad’s “ability to kill opposition and regain territory was made possible by the support of like-minded war criminals and kleptocontracts like Putin and the Iran regime.”
Regarding the bill, the U.S. representative said that he was “grateful that this bipartisan bill affirms the United States’ policy of non-normalization of the brutal Assad regime.”
The bill was unveiled after Arab states reinstated al-Assad into the Arab League. In addition, several Arab states also started working on normalizing relations with the Syrian government.
Wilson slammed the “disgraceful” readmission of the Syrian government into the League. “To do business with Assad is the normalization of death and depravity, and a contrast to the moral standards of American allies who are members of the Arab league.”
