IRGC kill 2 local militants while escaping US strike in Deir ez-Zor
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Two local militants affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were injured on Sunday during an armed clash in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria.
The clash occurred between local militants who had fled their headquarters out of fear of an American strike, and militants of Iraqi and Lebanese nationalities.
A military source from the IRGC in Deir ez-Zor told North Press that over 30 local militants had fled their positions and headquarters on the outskirts of the al-Mayadin desert.
The militants escaped with their weapons after detecting drones and warplanes in the sky above the town, fearing being targeted, the source added.
On Feb.2, the U.S. forces targeted Iranian militias’ positions in Deir ez-Zor and resulted in 40 casualties among the Iran-backed militias.
The U.S. airstrikes in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria, came in response to the killing of American soldiers at Tower 22 in Jordan.
The source added that leaders and militants of Iraqi and Lebanese nationalities clashed with the fleeing individuals, using machine guns. As a result, both militants Haider Yaqut and Suhayb al-Ahmad, residents of the city of Palmyra in eastern Homs, were injured.
Furthermore, the source confirmed that on Saturday night additional militants from the Liwa Fatemiyoun also abandoned their headquarters in the towns of Mahkan and al-Merei’iyah in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor. They took shelter in the homes of civilians due to their fear of further airstrikes.
