Jordan vows to combat drug, arms smuggling from Syria

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Tuesday that smuggling of drugs and arms from Syria to Jordan undermines national security, reiterating the Kingdom’s determination to eliminate the “danger and its backers.

In a statement, Sufian Qudah, the Jordan’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, said that Jordan has provided Syria with the names of smugglers, their supporters, and the regions where drugs are manufactured and stored during joint committee meetings.

The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates “deeply regretted” on Tuesday the Jordanian airstrikes on Syria, considering them “unjustified,” especially since they caused civilian casualties.

However, Qudah emphasized that “no concrete action has been taken to neutralize the danger.”

Qudah further explained that the smuggling of drugs and weapons from Syria to Jordan, which has resulted in the killing and injury of several Jordanian soldiers, poses a direct threat to Jordan’s security.

He stressed in the statement that “Jordan is firm in combating and completely eliminating drug smuggling.”

The spokesperson voiced the Kingdom’s readiness to coordinate with the Syrian government to stop smuggling operations and bring to justice smugglers and their backers.

Qudah firmly rejected the claims made by the Syrian government regarding the Jordanian borders with Syria, stating that they are not a “source of threat to Syria or passage for terrorists” into the northern neighbor.
