Turkish airstrikes violate Syria’s sovereignty – Syrian activist
Raqqa, Syria (North Press) – A Syrian human rights activist said on Tuesday that Turkish airstrikes violate Syria’s sovereignty and that the Syrian government is responsible for bringing this issue to the world’s attention.
Hussein Na’so, a Syrian human rights activist, told North Press that it is the responsibility of the Syrian government to protect civilians and halt Turkish attacks on northeastern Syria, especially since Syria is a member of the UN and should file a complaint specifically on Turkish airstrikes.
Since Jan.12, Turkey has been targeting service facilities, infrastructure, and security posts in northeastern Syria. Turkish airstrikes caused significant destruction in service facilities and deprived hundreds of thousands of people of electricity and water.
Na’so pointed out that Turkey’s attacks violate Syria’s sovereignty according to Article 2 of the 1945 UN Charter. He emphasized that Northeast Syria is part of Syrian territory, therefore, it is the duty of the Syrian government to shed light on these aggressions through the UN Security Council.
The Syrian government’s abstention from taking action against these attacks is a form of implicit “complicity” with Turkey to weaken and blackmail the AANES during political talks, according to Na’so.
The activist said that the guarantor parties, the U.S. and Russia, chose to remain silent as they share common interests with Turkey regarding the war in Ukraine and other regional and international issues.
