UN, EU diplomats discuss situation in Syria after Gaza conflict
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, discussed with the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, the repercussions of the Israel-Hamas war on Syria.
Borrell and Pedersen met in light of the escalating conflict in Gaza for the past 42 days, where they highlighted the regional implications of the Israel-Hamas war, including its impact on Syria.
Borrell said on social media platform X, “We also discussed the dire situation of the people in Syria, where the conflict is ongoing and shall not be forgotten.”
Geir Pedersen, for his part, said on the same platform that they discussed the ramifications of the Israel-Hamas war on Syrians, “who have already endured untold suffering.”
Meanwhile, the European Union’s Chargé d’Affaires to Syria, Dan Stoenescu, stated in a press release that despite the ongoing regional crisis, the EU’s diplomatic efforts to reach a political solution in Syria continue.
Stoenescu emphasized that the UN and European officials discussed the deteriorating situation faced by the people in Syria, where the conflict is ongoing and unresolved, in his words.
He also stated that the European Union renews its call for a sustainable solution to the Syrian conflict through a genuine and comprehensive political transition in line with UN Security Council Res. 2254.
