Unknown gunmen attack government posts in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor, Homs

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Unidentified gunmen attacked early on Thursday with machineguns and rockets the posts of the Syrian government forces in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor and Homs in eastern and central Syria.

A military source within the government forces told North Press correspondent that unknown gunmen targeted with three rockets a military post of the Division 17 affiliated with the government forces on the outskirts of the town of al-Sukhnah in the east of Homs. The attacks resulted in the injury of three soldiers and caused material damages in the post.

On Wednesday, unidentified gunmen targeted a patrol and the nearby military posts of the government forces in the al-Sukhnah desert. The attack was followed by clashes, resulting in the killing of one soldier.

The source added that another rocket attack targeted the Military Security headquarters, near the al-Tayara Roundabout in the countryside of Abu Kamal, causing material damages. Meanwhile, armed individuals attacked with machineguns a military post of the Fourth Division, near the al-Baloum Roundabout in the town of al-Mayadin, east of Deir ez-Zor city.

Iranian-backed militias and government forces control large areas of the Syrian Desert and the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, which witness intensive operations by Islamic State (ISIS) sleeper cells.
