Russian warplanes target areas in Syria’s Idlib
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – Russian warplanes launched on Friday intensive airstrikes on Zawiya Mountain in the south of Idlib, northwestern Syria, killing a woman and injuring an elderly man.
A commander in the opposition’s National Front for Liberation told North Press Russian warplanes targeted with about 10 airstrikes the villages and towns of Ihsim, Balshoon, Juzif, Kansafra, al-Bara, and Balyun in Zawiya Mountain.
The source added that Friday’s airstrikes are considered the most violent in the recent escalation and resulted in the killing of an elderly woman and the injury of her husband with light wounds. The man was taken to the al-Shami Hospital in the city of Ariha.
The Russian airstrikes coincided with rocket and artillery shelling by the Syrian government forces on the villages of Fatterah, Kafr Oweid, Sfuhen, Kansafra, Ruweiha in Zawiya Mountain, and the villages of Kafr Taal and Kafr Amma in the western countryside of Aleppo.
Areas in northwestern Syria have been witnessing a military escalation since two weeks, resulting in the killing and injury of more than 230 individuals and the displacement of thousands in Idlib, according to the Monitoring and Documentation Department of North Press.
Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.
In March 2020, Russia and Turkey reached an agreement in Moscow that stipulated a ceasefire, the establishment of a safe corridor, and the conduct of joint patrols on the M4/Aleppo-Latakia Highway.
