Former armed opposition leader killed in Daraa

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Unknown gunmen attacked a former leader within an armed opposition faction in eastern Daraa, resulting in his immediate death.

Dozens of former opposition military leaders in Daraa, who refused to join the government forces, have been targeted and killed by unknown perpetrators since the Russia-meditated reconciliation agreement between the opposition factions and the Syrian government forces in 2018.

In July 2018, the opposition armed factions and the Syrian government forces reached a ceasefire agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas in Daraa. Under the deal, the opposition armed factions agreed to hand over their weapons in exchange for staying in Daraa, and those who opposed the agreement were deported to Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS – formerly al-Nusra Front).

A local source told North Press, “Imad Saeed al-Miqadad, a former leader within the opposition factions, was shot dead by unknown gunmen riding a motorcycle in the town of Maaraba in the eastern countryside of Daraa.”

The source added that al-Miqadad was a former leader within the opposition factions and had joined the reconciliation agreement in 2018. After that, he returned to being a civilian and worked in trading. He also did not join any military formation affiliated with the government forces.

The source clarified that al-Miqadad had been subjected to several assassination attempts, with the latest in July 2022, where his house was shot at by unknown gunmen.
