QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Head of an Iranian oil company said on Monday Iran can export 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day to Syria after repair works were completed in Homs Refinery in central Syria.
In an interview with Fars news agency, Jalil Salari, chief executive of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC), said Iran, Venezuela and Syria signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding to build a new 140,000- barrel oil refinery in Syria, provided that the oil should be supplied by both Iran and Venezuela.
The new oil refinery will be built near the already existing refineries of Homs and Baniyas, he added.
Salari noted the expenses of repair and maintenance services will be less than that of building a new refinery. He went on to say that repairing the Homs refinery will benefit both Iran and Syria and it will also help in supplying fuel to the Axis of Resistance.
Iran has been a major ally of the Syrian government and provided economic, political, and military support during the Syrian conflict.
Iran’s support helped the Syrian government to regain control of areas it lost at the beginning of the conflict as it backed militias affiliated with the IRGC. It has managed to have influence in eastern Syria through infiltrating the community by tempting Arab tribes and recruiting the youth in its affiliated militias, and establishing cultural centers spread Shiite faith.
