2 IRGC leaders survived assassination attempts in Syria

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Two leaders of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) survived assassination attempts in Syria within 24 hours.

Unknown gunmen, riding a motorcycle, attacked Shahin Shahbar, an IRGC leader with machineguns in the outskirts of the town of al-Sukhnah in the eastern countryside of Homs, a source from the IRGC said.

Founded after Iran’s 1979 revolution to protect the new Islamic regime, the IRGC has become one of the most powerful paramilitary organizations in the Middle East. It has provided assistance to militant groups in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, the Palestinian territories, Syria, and Yemen. Its control over large sectors of the Iranian economy helps it fund its activities.

However, the attackers managed to flee, the source added.

In another operation, the IRGC leader Amir Abbas survived an assassination attempt in the countryside of the town of al-Mayadin, east of Deir ez-Zor, where unknown gunmen fired at his car. The firing led to the injury of his escort.

The Iranian-backed militias and Syrian government forces control vast swathes of the Syrian Desert and the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.
