Government removes another military post in Syria’s Daraa
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Syrian government forces evacuated on Thursday their military posts in the city of Daraa, southern Syria, for the second time in a few days.
North Press correspondent said the government forces cleared the al-Bahar post in Daraa al-Balad neighborhood in the city of Daraa after two years of establishing it following the settlement agreement in 2021.
He added that the post is considered the largest post of the government forces in the area. At least 30 soldiers and officers were stationed in the post.
The soldiers are from ranks of the Division 15 of the government forces, whereas the commanding officers are affiliated with the Military Security Branch and directly take orders from Brigadier General Luay al-Ali, head of the branch.
Three months ago, unidentified gunmen attacked the post, leading the soldiers to indiscriminately shoot at houses of the civilians.
Days earlier, the government forces evacuated two military posts in the Tariq al-Sad neighborhood in the city of Daraa. The reasons for the evacuation are still unknown.
Recently, Daraa has witnessed protests through which the protesters demanded “the overthrow of the Syrian regime” in tandem with the deteriorating economic conditions. Also, a state of insecurity has spread in Daraa including killing since the government has taken control over it in 2018.
In July 2018, the opposition armed factions and Syrian the government forces reached a ceasefire agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas in Daraa. Under the deal, the opposition armed factions agreed to hand over their weapons in exchange for staying in Daraa, and those who opposed the agreement were deported to Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS – formerly al-Nusra Front).
