Death toll of Morocco earthquake reaches 2,901
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Ministry of Interior of Morocco revealed on Tuesday that the number of deaths resulting from the earthquake that struck Morocco days ago has reached 2,901 people, while the number of injured has reached 5,530 individuals.
On Sept. 8, the earthquake struck at around 11.11 pm local time. Its epicenter was located in the High Atlas mountain range, specifically Ighil, a mountainous rural commune in Al-Haouz province near the Oukaimeden ski resort.
The Ministry of Interior stated that “the number of deaths reached 1,643 in Al-Haouz, while no new deaths have been recorded in the remaining provinces and regions affected.”
The Moroccan authorities continue their efforts to rescue and evacuate the injured and provide assistance to the victims. They are also working on reopening the roads that were damaged by the earthquake. Medical and civil defense sources in Morocco anticipate an increase in the death toll as rescue operations continue.
