Government forces, local gunmen resume clashes in western Daraa

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Clashes renewed between Syrian government forces and gunmen on Wednesday in the town of Tafas in western Daraa, resulting in the death of one person.

Sporadic clashes have been ongoing since Tuesday between government forces and an armed group from the town of Tafas.

A local source told North Press that “Firas Azi al-Ruwais was killed in clashes between local gunmen and government forces, which sparked after the latter advanced towards farms at the town.”

The source added that al-Ruwais is a member of the Bedouin tribes that inhibit the western countryside of Daraa and that he had been living in Tafas for several years.

The source added that government forces resumed shelling the outskirts of the town using tanks and Shilka vehicles, while advancing towards the farms surrounding the town.

Many locals have expressed their fear of the government’s campaign against their town, particularly due to the use of heavy shelling.
