Security chaos prevails in Daraa
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, several incidents of targeting took place in Daraa Governorate in southern Syria, as insecurity and instability continue to prevail in the region.
A local source told North Press that soldier of the Syrian government forces was killed after being targeted by unknown gunmen while he was standing in front of the automatic bakery in the city of Nawa in western Daraa.
In another incident, Sayed al-Mekdad, the leader of a group in the Eighth Brigade, affiliated with the government Military Intelligence Branch, was injured as a result of being targeted by gunmen in the town of Ghasm in eastern Daraa.
The source added that al-Mekdad was a former member of armed opposition factions and joined the Eighth Brigade after the settlement agreement in July 2018.
Similarly, Wafa’ al-Samara was killed after being targeted by gunmen in the town of Mhajjah in northern Daraa, and the reasons behind the attack are still unknown.
Unknown attackers targeted the post office building in the market area of Daraa al-Balad, in Daraa city, which the government forces use as a military post, with an explosive device without causing any injuries.
In the same incident, a civilian young man was injured after government forces started shooting indiscriminately towards civilians’ houses immediately after the explosion.
An armored military vehicle belonging to the government State Security Branch was targeted with an explosive device planted by unknown individuals on the road between the towns of al-Harra and Zamreen in northern Daraa. A number of soldiers were injured and transferred to the military hospital in al-Sanamayn city.
It is worth noting that the government forces have brought in military reinforcements and stationed themselves near the town of Tafas in western Daraa. This coincides with reports of a possible military operation in the area under the pretext of searching for operatives of the Islamic State (ISIS), according to residents in Daraa.
