Astana 20th round on Syria sets off in Kazakh capital

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The 20th round of Astana Peace talks on Syriastarted on Tuesday in the Kazakh capital, Astana, with the participation of Syrian government, the guarantor countries Russia, Iran and Turkey, and observer countries.

Syria’s delegation is represented by the Syrian Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister , Ayman Susan, Mikhail Bogdanov, Russian Special Presidential Envoy to the Middle East and Africa, represents the Russian delegation, Ali Asghar Khaji, the Senior Assistant to Iranian Foreign Minister in Special Political Affairs, represents the Iranian delegation, and Burak Akçapar, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, represents the Turkish delegation.

The 20th round of Astana talks will be held on June 20 and 21.

Bogdanov revealed that the UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen planned to take part in the round.

“Our colleagues from UN bodies are also here, namely Mr. Geir Pedersen, the UN secretary general’s Special Envoy for Syria,” Bogdanov told reporters before the round.

He noted that Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan would attend as “observer countries.”

The first Astana sessions began on January 23, 2017, in the Kazakh capital, in the presence of representatives of the Syrian government and the opposition, and under the auspices of the guarantor states.

Informed sources in Moscow told local media on June 5 that the quadripartite meeting on Syrian-Turkish normalization would be held on sidelines of Astana Peace Talks.

In recent days, Russia announced that its draft roadmap for developing relations between Syria and Turkey is ready.

In December of 2022, Russia hosted first talks between Syrian and Turkish defense ministers since 2011.
