Government-opposition shelling causes fire in crops in Syria’s Idlib
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – Areas in Aleppo, Latakia, and Idlib governorates in northwest Syria, also known as the de-escalation zone, witnessed on Saturday mutual shelling between Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front) and the Syrian government forces causing fire to crops.
The government forces shelled villages in Zawiya Mountain area, south of Idlib, with heavy artillery and missiles, a military source told North Press.
The source said that the shelling affected other areas in Aleppo western countryside and Kurds Mountain in Latakia.
On the other hand, a military source from the Syrian opposition told North Press that the Al-Fateh al-Mubin Operations Room, a coalition of several armed factions, attacked posts of the government forces in areas south of Idlib and north of Latakia with heavy artillery and missiles.
The mutual shelling caused fire to crops, the source added.
Although the de-escalation zone in northwest Syria is subject to a Russian-Turkish ceasefire agreement signed in March 2020, the area witnesses frequent mutual bombardment between Syrian government forces and opposition factions accompanied by Russian warplanes’ flight despite the entry of the ceasefire into force.
In March 2020, Russia and Turkey reached an agreement in Moscow that stipulated a ceasefire, the establishment of a safe corridor, and the conduct of joint patrols on the M4/Aleppo-Latakia Highway.
