EU’s Borrell says sanctions on Damascus to stay in effect

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Thursday, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said that the EU will maintain its sanctions on the Syrian government.

Borrell, whose remarks came during a press conference on the sidelines of the Brussels 7th Conference on Syria, said, “We will not re-establish full diplomatic relations with the Assad regime.”

He noted that the EU will not “start working on reconstruction, until a genuine and comprehensive political transition is firmly under way – which is not the case.”

Borrell continued that the sanctions will remain in full effect “as long as there is no progress.”
