US welcomes holding Assad accountable for abuses in Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The United States (US) welcomed on Wednesday the decision of Canada and the Netherlands to initiate legal proceedings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to hold the Syrian government accountable for torturing thousands of people.
The US Department of State said, in a statement, that those abuses are well documented, and al-Assad “regime” must be held accountable for them.
The ICU reported on June 12 that Canada and the Netherlands are suing the Syrian government in the ICJ.
For over twelve years, al-Assad has been responsible for innumerable atrocities, including those involving killings, torture, enforced disappearance, the use of chemical weapons, and other inhumane acts.
The department pledged that the US and its allies will keep seeking a durable political solution for the Syrian crisis “that is grounded in justice and accountability.”
