Syria, Turkey, Russia, Iran officials to meet in Kazakhstan next week

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Deputy foreign ministers of Syria, Turkey, Russia, and Iran will meet in Kazakhstan’s capital of Astana on June 21, Russia’s state news agency RIA Novosti reported today.

The last time the four sides, together with Syrian opposition representatives, met in Astana was in July 2021. The so-called ‘Astana Process’ has attempted to mediate a solution to Syria’s war since 2017.

The foreign ministers of the four countries met in Moscow on May 10. Damascus has so far rejected any normalization with Turkey without the latter’s withdrawal of troops from northern Syria.

In December of 2022, Russia hosted first talks between Syrian and Turkish defense ministers since 2011.
